FAQS

Is it easy ?

Yes. There's a video available if you want to watch two builders make their guitars from scratch - see the Contact Us page

Can I make an acoustic?

Yes - it's a much longer course, but the results are spectacular.

What's the difference between a humbucker and a single coil pickup?

Essentially the humbucker is two single coils wired together in such a way that it cancels out the hum noise a single coil tends to make. They make a deeper, richer sound - great for rock or jazz. The single coil is that clear, more jangly sound that you get form , say, a telecaster. It's a matter of personal choice which one you choose.

What's the best wood?

No such thing. You can use many types, but not all woods are good tone woods, and not all are hard enough for some jobs, such as fingerboards. Mahogany, Ash, Alder are commonly used for bodies, but if you have a piece you fancy using have a word with us to check that it can do the job.

What is a locking tuner

This clamps the string into the machine head - sometimes just behind the top nut - to make sure it can't slip. More important for players use a whammy bar a lot, or use a lot of vibrato and string bends

What is a coil tap

This enables one of the two coils in a humbucker to be used separately as a single coil. Usually this is switched on and off by a push pull tone pot for that pickup.

What are the different bridges

Many types - but most important is that the bridge allows adjustment for string height, and for intonation, for each string separately. It should also be comfortable for the heel of your hand if you like to mute the strings sometimes with the palm of your hand.

Can I have my own logo

Yes - you can have something made for you

Can I do any shape I want

Yes, as long as technically it's suitable for a guitar, in terms of strength, neck access etc.

Can I have special inlays

Yes - but they take a lot of time, and are difficult. Talk to Mark first about these.

Can I bring my own hardware

No - Bailey's supply any hardware of your choice, as prices include all aspects - supply, and fitting etc.

Does Mark ever play a guitar without a cigarette ?

No.
