Bailey began its BYO courses in Oct 1998, the first being an evening class which saw two guitars being made and finished in Jan 1999. By the end of 1999 there were 16 guitars, and the year 2000 brought the numbers up to 60.
Apart from several months closure due to the move to Scotland (in 2003), the course has run for 9 months of the year, and has settled into a once a month event between March and November, at our workshop in South Ayrshire. There are now well over 200 BYO guitars, and many new home builders. We do not claim to be able to turn someone into a guitar maker during a 5 day course - the aim is simply to make a high quality guitar to your own design and specifications.
We welcome anyone who is interested in building - if you are under 16 you have to come with an adult who is ALSO building ; the youngest builder to date was Mike Thompson(BYO101,185) who was 12 and came with his dad Sandy(BYO102,155). It's a great GROUP activity for up to four friends or relatives. We actively encourage women builders as so far there have been only 9 guitars built by females - so get in touch ! If you have any kind of special needs please ask as we have been able to make the course work for everybody so far, including making adaptations for using a wheel chair in the workshop. Big Thanks to Tam Rae(BYO182a) for all his feedback & advice to make that happen. Don't exclude yourself - if you want to build, let us work out how we can make that happen.
